5 Chinese Female Fashion Designers that are Making Waves

Welcome to our 7th #aroundtheworld! Today, we will be discussing 5 Chinese female designers that have forever changed the world of fashion. Enjoy our article on Tasha Liu, Lu Yan, Wendy Yu, Anna Sui, and Vera Wang!



Tasha Liu


Tasha Liu is a mainland Chinese trendsetter and fashion designer, best known for giving a platform for young Asian independent designers through her brand Labelhood at Shanghai Fashion Week. She has been supporting independent designers for over a decade. In 2009, she co founded the multi-brand retail giant Dong Liang and in 2013, the brand joined the “Design by Shanghai” programme hosted by Shanghai Fashion Week in cooperation with the British Fashion Council, to gain exposure for local talent abroad.


Lu Yan


Lu Yan is a Chinese supermodel, fashion designer and actress. She has walked for brands including Christian Dior, Christians Lacroix, and Alexander McQueen. She was raised in a simple home with her father being a miner and her home being in a rural village in the Jiangxi province. Despite this, she never let her hardship-filled upbringing stop her from achieving her dream. In 2013, she founded the brand Comme Moi. Even with no formal experience in design, she has racked up many celebrity clients and is becoming one of the most in demand fashion designers in China. She is now considered one of the veterans of the fashion world.


Wendy Yu


Wendy Yu is a Chinese investor, entrepreneur and fashion designer and is the CEO of Yu Holdings, a conglomerate that seeks to unite and align investment with innovation, cultural and creative exchange. She was born in the Zhejiang province to Jingyuan Yu, the billionaire founder of the Mengtian Group. Her first job was an internship at Vogue China and it is said to have really opened her eyes to “observe the inner workings of fashion at a publication”. She also launched the Yu Prize, her new program to promote rising fashion talents in China. She was also honored with the Millennial Leadership Award for her support of emerging talent.


Anna Sui


Anna Sui is a Chinese-American fashion designer known for her vintage style. Her first runway show took place in New York, and featured light pieces from her collections. Sui’s designs have been featured in Vogue several times. Her store in New York is known for its bright red floors, purple walls and antique furniture. In addition, Sui has sold designs on eBay to donate to Citizens of Justice and Peace after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. She has done charity events for several other causes, such as one in which she donated to the World Wildlife Fund. Sui will receive an award by the National Arts Club for her inspiring career achievements in the fashion industry. Her designs have been worn by Madonna, Adut Akech and Lea Julian.


Vera Wang


Vera Wang is a Chinese-American designer, who is famous for her beautiful wedding dresses. Her wedding dresses have been worn by many, such as Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey. Additionally, Wang designs outfits for ice skaters, since ice skating was an important sport to her growing up. She designed ice skating costumes for bronze medalist Nancy Kerrigan and U.S. national champion Evan Lysacek. She is a feminist, who says “as the mother of two daughters, I have great respect for women. And I don't ever want to lose that.”
