Keke Palmer: The First African American Female to Host the VMAs Solo

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

Keke Palmer hosted the MTV VMAs a week ago, and she's being hailed as one of the best VMA hosts in history.

The annual MTV Video Music Awards were held on August 30th, and let’s just say, it was a lot different than normal. There was a “socially distanced red carpet” and no audience members watching the event. On top of that, the artists wore masks while performing, and during their acceptance speeches. But it also made history for another reason.

The host, Keke Palmer made history by becoming the first African American woman to host the VMAs solo. Palmer had to take COVID-19 tests every two days, and pre-recorded her segments in front of a green screen. She also dedicated her speech to the frontline medical workers who “put themselves in harm’s way” and “showed us the true meaning of courage”.

In addition, Palmer gave a message to honor Chadwick Boseman, who played the first black superhero in a major motion picture. Unfortunately, the Black Panther star passed away from colon cancer two days before the VMAs, and as a tribute, the entire event was dedicated to him
