Selena Gomez, Rare Beauty, and Mental Health Awareness

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

Our Pick of the Month for October is about the singer/ songwriter Selena Gomez! Here at Like a Girl, we love her music so keep reading to learn more about her next venture!

Selena Gomez is one of the most well known pop stars in the music industry today. Her career started at age fifteen, as she starred in the hit series Wizards of Waverly Place, which won her an Emmy award in 2009. Her album Rare was called “one of the best pop albums to be released in recent memory” by Variety and the lead single Lose You to Love Me earned Gomez her first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her fame and awards are great, but what really stands out is her motivation to raise mental health awareness.

Her makeup line Rare Beauty, named after her album Rare, has a goal to raise 100 million dollars in the next ten years. The money will be used to give people access to mental health services and the Rare Impact Fund will donate to several mental health organizations like The Trevor Project. The beauty brand itself is striving to break down the standards of perfection. Gomez explains the significance of the word Rare on The Tonight Show as she says “There are some girls who are hurting because they feel like they don’t fit in. But this word is eliminating that, because you weren’t meant to look like everyone else. You are meant to be who you are, and that’s unique and that’s rare.”

Gomez herself has had a fair share of mental health struggles. After years of being in a toxic relationship, they eventually ended it amicably. Her kidney transplant due to complications with Lupus impacted her mental health also. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and suffered from anxiety, depression and panic attacks. “I’ve tried a lot of things, but one thing I’ve never stopped doing is asking for help. That was the hardest part, but I truly believe that that’s why I’m stronger.” says Gomez.

Struggle after struggle, Selena Gomez managed to pick herself up every time. After two years of working on her makeup line, she released it on September 3rd. Her makeup line promotes mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ acceptance, authenticity, positivity, and creating safe environments in the beauty community for people of color. Gomez managed to use her personal mental health struggles to help those around her, which is something that should continue to be deeply appreciated.

Here are some of Selena Gomez’s most inspiring quotes.

“If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.”

“Being rare is about being comfortable with yourself. I’ve stopped trying to be perfect. I just want to be me.”

“I want us all to stop comparing ourselves to each other and just start embracing our own uniqueness.”

“You can’t be afraid of what people are going to say, because you’re never going to make everyone happy.”

“You are not defined by an Instagram photo, by a like, by a comment. That does not define you.”

“I don’t want people to just see me as just sad and hurt. I don’t want that anymore. I wanted people to know that I experienced something real and that part of me is over."
