Marilynn Malerba is soon going to be appointed by President Biden as the next US Treasurer, and become the first Native American to hold this position. Malerba had earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Connecticut, and additionally a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Yale. She is a member of the Mohegan Tribe, and originally worked as a nurse.
Malerba Malerba became the first female chief of the Mohegan Tribe in 2010, and the position is a lifetime appointment. She also serves as a chair of the Tribal Self-Governance Advisory Committee, a member of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee and a member of the Tribal Advisory Committee for the National Institute of Health. She has released papers with the goal of improving the tribe’s health and general welfare. More recently, President Biden announced he will appoint Malerba as the next US Treasurer. She has stated that “I hope that I inspire all young women who come from very humble beginnings and to understand that they can achieve if they allow themselves the freedom to say yes to opportunities when they present themselves.”
As Malerba becomes Treasurer of the United States, she will become the first Native American woman to have her signature on American currency. She will become the leader of the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs which will allow communication with tribes. She will continue to be an inspiration to Native Americans, ensuring that they remain respected and valued.
