Around the World: 5 Asian Artists

Welcome to our 20th #aroundtheworld! Today, we will be discussing 5 Asian Artists . Enjoy our article on Rina Sawayama, Audrey Nuna, Japanese Breakfasts, Deb Never, and Raveena!

As we all know, the arts are what make the world go around. After all, what would we do without creativity? To celebrate the talent we see everyday, we’re highlighting five of our favorite Asian artists.

Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-British singer, composer, model, and actress. An immigrant from Japan, she was originally studying psychology and sociology at Magdalene College before deciding to pursue music and modelling. Her career started off with the release of her single “Sleeping in Walking”, and her music instantly became a hit. She’s very well-known for her debut extended play Rina, which she self-released. An openly queer idol, she advocates against conversion therapy and serves as a great role model.

Audrey Nuna, born Audrey Chu, is a Korean-American R&B singer and rapper. Her songs are well-known for their unique combination of multiple genres. She’s been active in the music industry from 2018 to the present, releasing singles often.

Japanese Breakfast is an indie-rock band headed by Korean-American Michelle Zauner, a musician, director, and author. They’ve been active as early as 2013, when they released June, the result of a project where one song was recorded every day for the month of June. Their style has been described in a number of ways, ranging from experimental pop to lo-fi. The band has exploded this year, with an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and a few new songs.

Deb Never is a successful self-taught musician who uses music to express herself. Originally from the state of Washington, she started out her career as a session guitarist and has released a number of songs independently. Her best year was in 2019, where she performed with the band Brockhampton on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a sold-out LA concert. Her debut project, House on Wheels EP, is described by her as a deeply personal project and has promoted her as a rising star.

Raveena Aurora, known by her first name, is an American singer-songwriter born in Massachusetts after her parents immigrated from India. Her first album, Lucia, was released independently in 2019 and named one of the best albums of the year by NPR. Her online presence was boosted with the release of her first EP (Shanti) in 2017. This explored themes including self-love and had a healing feel, with a blend of R&B and jazz genres. She’s highly commended as a strong female icon and hopes to use her experience to help others.
