As an organization, we absolutely love highlighting those who may not get press coverage elsewhere. Hopefully, our resources can help you discover role models of all types. Today, we bring you a specific category: South-Asian comedians.
Aparna Nancherla is an actress as well as a comedian. A first-generation immigrant, she grew up in Washington, DC. Her standup career began after she graduated from college, while she took jobs to write comedy. She’s appeared on numerous television specials and shows, where her quirky humor is appreciated.
Aditi Mittal is most well-known for being one of the first female standup comics in India. She’s been commended for her witty intelligence that she includes in her comedy and writing. A big part of her routine is the belief that humor is the best cure for sorrow, and she has taken inspiration from big names like Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig.
Mindy Kaling may be the most recognizable name on this list. Launched into stardom with her role of Kelly on The Office, she holds roles ranging from writing to directing. Also a first-generation immigrant, she graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in playwriting and delved straight into comedy. She has quite an extensive filmography, and has been nominated for a variety of awards.
Bharti Singh is a comedic personality and writer, credited with the creation of various sketch shows. Her television career is impressive, to say the least, as she’s appeared on quite a few tv series. Quite notably, her career was noted in Forbes “India’s Celebrity 100” list. What a role model!
Sumukhi Suresh, like many other comedians on this list, is an actor, writer, director, and comedian. Her popular sketches, which she writes and stars in, are well known around the world - one news source even nicknamed her “India’s Tina Fey”. She worked as a chef for a number of years before realizing her true love was comedy. Now, she uses her prestige to take a progressive stance on feminism and serve as an inspiration for female comedic hopefuls.
