Welcome to our 21st #aroundtheworld! Today, we will be discussing 5 LGBTQ+ Activists. Enjoy our article on Alice Nkom, Laverne Cox, Alexya Salvador, Lena Waithe, and Audre Lorde!



Alice Nkom, a Cameroonian lawyer born in 1945, is very well known for her advocacy towards the decriminalization of homosexuality in Cameroon. Before this became the main focus of her career, her work involved defense in cases of police violence and other similar situations. She founded the Association for the Defence of Homosexuality (ADEFHO) in 2003, and was greatly commended. In 2014 she was awarded with the German 7th Human Rights Award for her work as a widely known defender and her speaking at Human Rights conferences.


Laverne Cox is a transgender American actress best known for her role as Sophia Burset on the series Orange is the New Black. She’s won many awards for her acting, and broken numerous barriers along the way! She is an avid advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and has been widely featured in the media. By peers and critics alike, she’s been commended for her trailblazing career - her presence has led to a growing conversation of transgender culture.


Alexya Salvador is a Brazilian teacher and reverend - the first transgender reverend in Latin America. A movie featuring the story of her life, “God is a Woman” was schedule to appear at a Docs in Progress event during the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. She started her career out as a public school teacher, then transitioning to religion and politics. Her platform is one of support for LGBT rights, education, and adoption.


Lena Waithe, a renowned screenwriter, producer, and actress, is known for her huge impacts in the queer media. She was included in Time’s most influential people of 2018 and on Fast Company’s Queer 50 list in 2021. Her roles in the production and acting of television and movies are many, and she serves as a huge role model for minorities in entertainment.


Audre Lorde is an American writer, feminist, librarian, and civil rights activist. Described by herself as a “Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet”, she dedicated her life to confronting injustices in race, sex, class, and issues like capitalism and homophobia. Her poetry revolves around the same, centering around issues like civil rights, and the exploration of black female identity. Her work is still impactful today, and she serves as a great inspiration to all.
